    The genetic code of the germ that caused the Black Death has been reconstructed by scientists for the first time. The researchers extracted DNA fragments of the ancient bacterium from the teeth of medieval corpses found in London. They say the pathogen is the ancestor of all modern plagues.     Two of the holy grails of medicine - stem cell technology and precision gene therapy - have been united for the first time in humans, say scientists.   • Finger length clue to motor neurone disease

    The length of a person’s fingers could reveal their risk of motor neurone disease, according to a study. UK researchers measured the finger length of 110 people, including 47 with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the most common form of the disease. The study, in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, suggests a link between a longer fourth finger relative to the index finger and ALS.     People with fewer qualifications are prone to age more quickly, a study which looked at 400 men and women says. DNA evidence suggests cellular ageing is more advanced in adults with no qualifications compared with those who have a university degree. Experts think education might help people lead more healthy lives.
