  • Cause found for Severe hypoglycaemia

    15 October 2011, by Health

The cause of a rare and severe form of hypoglycaemia - or very low levels of sugar in the blood - is genetic, say researchers. The life-threatening condition means the body does not have enough energy to function. Scientists at the University of Cambridge say mutations in the AKT2 gene are to blame. Writing in the journal Science, they say there are already cancer drugs which target a similar process. Hypoglycaemia can be caused by a disruption in the balance between the hormone (...)

But the WHO warns that a lack of funds threatens progress, especially in relation to multi-drug resistant TB. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said there was no cause for complacency. • Sequenced DNA of a woman who lived to 115 years old

    15 October 2011, by Health

The entire DNA sequence of a woman who lived to 115 has been pieced together by scientists. The woman, who was the oldest in the world at the time of her death, had the mind of someone decades younger and no signs of dementia, say Dutch experts. The study, reported at a scientific conference in Canada, suggests she had genes that protected against dementia. Further work could give clues to why some people are born with genes for a long life, says a UK scientist. It is more than (...)
